A Sprinkle of Magic

soft candlelight
the crunch of giftwrap
childrens' laughter
sparkling eyes
flushed cheeks
stockings on the bedpost
glittering tree baubles
jingling bells
a partridge in a pear tree
the crunch of footsteps on snow
twinkling tree lights
hot mince pies
squeals of delight
the scent of spices
the laughter of loved ones
a sprinkling of love

HAPPY CHRISTMAS

Anticipation rules!

I was pondering today whilst at work - as it was so very quiet and I had nothing to do - thinking there's only a few days to go 'till Christmas day and how when I was a child it was almost excruciatingly unbearable to wait! The night before Christmas day I couldn't fall asleep how l tired and in the wee dark hours of the morning I would eventually drift off unawares.I can even visualise the various bedrooms I have been in on Christmas eve. A cold night in snowy Canada, a crisp cold one in England in the 60's and mild one in Mexico City, even creeping down the stairs in my teens in the early morning as a teenager in the 70's to see IF Papa Noel had been yet!

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I've always firmly believed and cherished the feelings in the anticipation of the things, the fun of the chase, the waiting and crossing off date son a calender, saving up for that fabulous coat/bag/shoes.... and the anticipation I find that is key in anything, gifts, happiness, sex....does it quite live up to the anticipation?? Usually yes... but the anticipation does last longer!

I'm all done, almost....

I'm sorry if this annoys or irritates you, but it is true. I AM  almost done!

After spending ££££'s for decades on Christmas  and putting the cost all on credit cards, that has all changed and over the last ten years or so l have honed my Christmas buying skills to this painless-ish cash only affair. I'm now just waiting for a couple of deliveries and one more pay day to buy three more gifts.

I start buying Christmas presents just as so soon as I see something that I know will suit one of my friends or family members.

This year I've bought even more of my Christmas presents online. This is great for research, for comparing prices and then going into the shop to save on postal costs or for actually buying, as many postal costs are waived the nearer we get to the big day. I've bought from lots of different sites including Amazon and sshhhhh eBay too, but not second hand goods just better prices, so this is good for the credit crunch and for my purse.

I  store the presents on top of my wardrobe in a lovely and very old battered tan leather expandable suitcase. Which of course has been long filled and now an assortment of tk maxx bags are filled too! Then about  a week before Christmas I spend a day off or evening alone with a glass or three of sherry, wrapping and sorting into gift bags.

I have made or crafted some of my gifts, of course I can't tell you here what these are, as I don't want to spoil any surprises. I always think the greatest gifts at Christmas are those that have been thought and chewed over. It doesn't take much to remember and even write  down ideas, or when someone mentions a book or talks about something that can be linked to a great gift. Ohhhhh I wish I could explain further..... but I darent tell!

I put out the children's Advent calenders, of the chocolate Simpson's variety and to fill my own heart I have for the the first time in over twenty years put out a traditional Christmas Advent for me and Bahumbugs. This I thinking is a clever notion, as when I am away next week Bahumbugs will have to open the doors and he will be badgered by the kids, lest he forgets!

I look forward to this short trip, which I make every year in early December. I have found myself get a bit low over the Christmas period, and I think I can avoid this by making this trip down to Kent each year to visit with my parents. I take down the Christmas gifts with me and as now I no longer have  an old banger of a car I drive rather than train it down. This also means that I am not hampered by the issue of weighty gifts.

When I come back it will be Christmas Carols in the Catherdral, my daughter is in the choir and I always find it very emotional listening to Silent Night and others in that setting. My two teenage children thought they would be sophisticated this year and said they would be happy to have  acurry, or eat out, go away for  few days, now they want a home style christmas, not a single trimming or bauble out of place, just the same, funny eh?

Then it'll be about a week to go and in a flicker of a childs smile it will all be over. Sigh.

Bah Humbug...

I haven't really taken much notice of the Christmas displays and
decorations in the shops until today.  I met with my good friend and  fellow southerner ( see Stroppy  southern strumpets),  and 'chief cheerer upper' Lynn, for an early lunch, some good chat, much supportive, 'Oh I know!'s  and 'No! Really!'s  from both of us. After a glass of house red, when we stumbled, quite literally in my case, across two aisle fulls (eye fulls) of glitz, glitter and  much festive ho ho ho  arrays of  festooned garlands, cards, wrap and anything and everything you don't want or need, to make your day special or not.
Indeed I bought some suitable stocking fillers, a couple of  'commercial' Advent calenders,  I just cannot find any 'real' ones anymore, and well hey they do have chocolate in them after all, and other gifts to add to the now overflowing area at the top of  our wardrobe. ( Yes I am almost done!)
We spent  a wonderfully relaxing afternoon actually, finishing it off with the
'must do' trip around TK Maxx, followed by a warm the cockles latte. We parted and I walked home warmed  more by the friendship and sisterhood, from which I get to feel like me for a unpressurised, stress free couple of hours.
The reason I call this post Bah humbug is, by the time I got my coat off and settled in on the couch to catch up with the family, I became acutely aware of an atmosphere brewing.  I ignored the warning of the snarling tummy and ploughed on, gave the kids the warm seasonal gloves l'd found them and told them I had bought their advents. The excitement was telling in their voices and as they began to chat, speculate and talk generally about the christmas period, as only teenagers can ... my daughter gets almost sick with excitement, my son too but less so he is more contained.
A whiff of humbug pervaded the room and I don't mean the classic mint  flavour.
Oh dear I thought no, don't start please.
But Mr Grumpy began his furtive murmurings and said he could well do without it, we had done it to death and we should get far away or even better cancel it. I protested - unsurprisingly for those who know me, I never know when to shut up - All I want is to be in our home, with the family and dog and have a quiet relaxing day. But apparently I don't do relaxing on the day and everyone walks around on eggshells. I can smell the egg rot! I do Christmas well, Mr Grumpy doesn't. I wondered if this was for effect, as this comes every year just like Christmas, it happens. The kids love it and although a few weeks ago they said they would have a curry for Christmas day in deference to Mr G wanting a change, I thought to postpone the turkey to Boxing day, after all I've had my way for over 30 years, now they tell me as we get nearer they want the traditional day and so said all of us! (well three of us).
Even though the kids are now 16 and 14 they ARE still kids.
Yes I agree its all commercial twaddle out there and uber overkill with parents apparently going seriously into hock for  zillions of gifts and ££ presents, that IS the wrong message.
We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in this country, though I have experienced it when I lived in the states and it is the spirit, the essence of  that time which I try and emulate. I have created traditions for our festive period. We read story books, light candles, share our thanks in our togetherness.
Apparently I have to drag My G into the Christmas period scratching and clawing all the way. I did suggest he went and stayed with his mother who does Garbo every year. Oh dear watch this space, I don't have a good feeling about this...

Like a moth to a flame...

Everything changes, nothing stays the same, so the saying goes, and yet here I am in a space where nothing has seemingly changed; it is just...
